Medical cannabis is legal in West Virginia. The state's medical marijuana program was established in 2017 and became operational in 2021. Adult-use (recreational) cannabis remains illegal.

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Intractable pain
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Severe chronic or intractable pain
  • West Virginia allows telemedicine for follow-up appointments but requires the initial certification to be done in person.

Step 2

Register with the West Virginia Office of Medical Cannabis.

Step 3

Pay the application fee and submit required documentation.

  • Proof of residency
  • Physician certification
  • Application fee ($50 as of 2024)
  • Visit the West Virginia Office of Medical Cannabis website
  • Complete the online application
  • Upload required documents, including physician certification
  • Pay the application fee
  • Await approval (processing time varies)
  • Obtain a new certification from a registered physician
  • Submit a renewal application online
  • Pay the renewal fee ($50 as of 2024)
  • Renew annually
