Both medical and adult-use (recreational) cannabis are legal in Washington D.C. The medical marijuana program was established in 1998 and became operational in 2013. Recreational use was legalized in 2014.

Medical Marijuana Card Process

Step 1

Obtain a recommendation from a registered healthcare practitioner.

Medical Eligibility & Consultation Options

  • Washington D.C. allows registered practitioners to recommend cannabis for any condition they believe can be alleviated by medical marijuana use.
  • D.C. allows telemedicine for medical cannabis consultations, including for initial certifications and renewals.

Step 2

Register with the D.C. Department of Health's Medical Marijuana Program.

Step 3

Pay the application fee and submit required documentation.

  • Proof of D.C. residency
  • Practitioner recommendation
  • Application fee ($100, with reduced fees available for eligible patients)
  • Visit the D.C. Department of Health's Medical Marijuana Program website
  • Complete the online application
  • Upload required documents, including practitioner recommendation
  • Pay the application fee
  • Await approval (processing time typically 30 days)
  • Obtain a new recommendation from a registered practitioner
  • Submit a renewal application online
  • Pay the renewal fee ($100, with reduced fees available)
  • Renew annually
