Both medical and adult-use (recreational) cannabis are legal in Oregon. The medical marijuana program was established in 1998, and recreational use was legalized in 2014, with sales beginning in 2015.

Medical Marijuana Card Process

Step 1

Obtain a recommendation from an Oregon-licensed physician.

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Cachexia
  • Severe pain
  • Severe nausea
  • Seizures
  • Persistent muscle spasms
  • Any condition approved by the Oregon Health Authority
  • Oregon allows telemedicine for medical cannabis consultations, including for initial certifications and renewals.

Step 2

Register with the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP).

Step 3

Pay the application fee and submit required documentation.

Patient Registration & Eligibility Requirements

  • Valid Oregon driver's license or state ID
  • Proof of residency
  • Physician recommendation
  • Application fee ($200 as of 2024, with reduced fees for low-income patients)
  • Visit the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program website
  • Complete the online application
  • Upload required documents, including physician recommendation
  • Pay the application fee
  • Await approval (processing time typically 30 days)
  • Obtain a new recommendation from an Oregon-licensed physician
  • Submit a renewal application online
  • Pay the renewal fee ($200, with reduced fees available as of 2024)
  • Renew annually
