Massachusetts Cannabis Laws and Regulations

Both medical and adult-use (recreational) cannabis are legal in Massachusetts. Medical marijuana was legalized in 2012, and adult-use cannabis was legalized in 2016 with sales beginning in November 2018.

Medical Marijuana Card Process

Step 1

Obtain a certification from a qualified healthcare provider.

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
  • Crohn's disease

  • Other debilitating conditions as determined by a qualifying patient's healthcare provider
  • Massachusetts allows telemedicine for medical cannabis consultations, including initial certifications and renewals.

Step 2

Register with the Massachusetts Medical Use of Marijuana Program.

Step 3

Pay the application fee and submit required documentation.

Patient Registration & Eligibility Requirements

  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license or state ID
  • Proof of residency
  • Healthcare provider certification
  • Application fee ($50, waived for patients with verified financial hardship)
  • Visit the Massachusetts Medical Use of Marijuana Program website
  • Complete the online application
  • Upload required documents, including healthcare provider certification
  • Pay the application fee (if applicable)
  • Await approval (usually within 10 business days)
  • Obtain a new certification from a qualified healthcare provider
  • Submit a renewal application online
  • Pay the renewal fee ($50, waived for patients with verified financial hardship)
  • Renew annually
