Colorado Cannabis Laws and Regulations

Both medical and adult-use (recreational) cannabis are legal in Colorado. Medical marijuana was legalized in 2000 with Amendment 20, and adult-use cannabis was legalized in 2012 with Amendment 64, making Colorado one of the first states to legalize recreational use.

Medical Marijuana Card Process

Step 1

Obtain a recommendation from a licensed physician.

  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV or AIDS
  • Cachexia
  • Persistent muscle spasms
  • Seizures
  • Severe nausea
  • Severe pain
  • PTSD
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Any condition for which a physician could prescribe an opioid
  • Colorado allows telemedicine for medical cannabis consultations, including renewals. However, the initial visit for a new patient must be in person.

Step 2

Register with the Colorado Medical Marijuana Registry.

  • Valid Colorado driver's license or state ID
  • Proof of residency
  • Physician certification
  • Application fee ($29.50 as of 2023)

Step 3

Pay the application fee and submit required documentation.

  • Visit the Colorado Medical Marijuana Registry website
  • Complete the online application
  • Upload required documents, including physician certification
  • Pay the application fee
  • Await approval (usually within 1-3 business days)
  • Obtain a new physician certification if required (annually for most patients)
  • Submit a renewal application online
  • Pay the renewal fee
  • Renew annually
