Ohio Cannabis Laws and Regulations

Medical cannabis is legal in Ohio. The state's medical marijuana program was approved in 2016 and became operational in 2019. As of 2024, adult-use (recreational) cannabis has also been legalized in Ohio, with the law taking effect in late 2023.

  • Pain (chronic, severe, or intractable)
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Spinal cord disease or injury
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Ohio allows telemedicine for medical cannabis consultations, including for initial certifications and renewals.

Register with the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program.

Step 3

Pay the application fee and submit required documentation.

Patient Registration & Eligibility Requirements

  • Valid Ohio driver's license or state ID
  • Proof of residency
  • Physician recommendation
  • Application fee ($50 for patients, $25 for caregivers as of 2024; veterans and low-income individuals may qualify for reduced fees)
  • Visit the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program website
  • Complete the online application
  • Upload required documents, including physician recommendation
  • Pay the application fee
  • Await approval (processing time typically 2-4 weeks)
  • Obtain a new recommendation from a certified physician
  • Submit a renewal application online
  • Pay the renewal fee ($50 for patients, $25 for caregivers as of 2024)
  • Renew annually
