As of 2024, medical cannabis is legal in Kentucky, but the program is not yet operational. Recreational cannabis remains illegal.

Medical Marijuana Card Process

Step 1

Obtain a written certification from a qualified medical provider.

  • Cancer
  • Chronic, severe, intractable, or debilitating pain
  • Epilepsy or any other intractable seizure disorder
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscle spasms or spasticity
  • Chronic nausea or cyclical vomiting syndrome
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Any terminal illness
  • The use of telemedicine for medical cannabis consultations has not been specified in the current law.

Step 2

Register with the Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program (once established).

Step 3

Pay the application fee and submit required documentation.

  • Valid Kentucky driver's license or state ID
  • Proof of residency
  • Medical provider certification
  • Application fee (amount to be determined)
  • Consultation with a qualified medical provider
  • Registration with the state's medical cannabis program
  • Payment of fees
  • Approval and issuance of a medical cannabis card
  • The renewal process has not been specified but is likely to involve annual renewal with a new medical certification.
