Medical cannabis is legal in Iowa, but in a limited form. Recreational cannabis remains illegal.

Medical Marijuana Card Process

Step 1

Obtain a healthcare practitioner certification.

  • Cancer (with severe or chronic pain, nausea or severe vomiting, cachexia or severe wasting)
  • Multiple sclerosis with severe and persistent muscle spasms
  • Seizures
  • AIDS or HIV
  • Crohn's disease
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Untreatable pain
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Autism with self-injurious or aggressive behaviors
  • Corticobasal degeneration
  • Terminal illness with a probable life expectancy of under one year (if the illness or its treatment produces severe or chronic pain, nausea or severe vomiting, cachexia or severe wasting)
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Chronic pain
  • Iowa allows telemedicine for medical cannabis consultations, including for certifications.

Step 2

Apply for a medical cannabidiol registration card with the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Step 3

Pay the application fee and submit required documentation.

  • Valid Iowa driver's license or state ID
  • Proof of residency
  • Healthcare practitioner certification
  • Application fee ($100 for patients, $25 for caregivers; reduced fees available for eligible patients)
  • Visit the Iowa Department of Public Health website
  • Complete the online application
  • Upload required documents, including practitioner certification
  • Pay the application fee
  • Await approval (processing time varies)
  • Obtain a new certification from a healthcare practitioner
  • Submit a renewal application online
  • Pay the renewal fee
  • Renew annually
